Duma Marine Resources National Cadet Training Programme (NCP)

In alignment with South Africa’s mission to grow its maritime industry and establish itself as a supplier of highly trained seafarers, Duma Marine Resources proudly offers a comprehensive National Cadet Training Programme (NCP). This initiative, supported by the South African Government and the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI), is designed to enhance the skills of South African seafarers while addressing the growing global demand for maritime expertise.

As one of the select companies entrusted with managing the NCP, we invite international shipping companies to partner with us in this forward-thinking initiative, which helps shape the future of South Africa’s maritime workforce.

Entry Requirements for Students Interested in the NCP
To be eligible for the sea-going component of the NCP, South African students must have successfully completed the academic and theoretical components of the Deck or Marine Engineering Officer Programmes in line with the STCW Convention and the SAMSA Code. Additionally, candidates must meet the following criteria:

• A valid SAMSA (or higher-requirement Flag state) medical certificate, confirming “fit-for-duty” status
• Successful completion of the SAMSA eyesight test
• A valid South African passport

Benefits for Shipowners Providing Cadet Training Berths
International shipowners and managers that participate in the NCP are presented with significant benefits, including:

• No financial burden for the shipowner/manager regarding cadet training costs, as these are fully covered by the South African Government (only victuals and on-board incidentals are the responsibility of the shipowner)
• Cadets onboard come with valid STCW safety certificates and international seafarer medical certifications

What is Required from Shipowners in the NCP Programme?
Shipping companies joining the NCP are required to provide training berths and to mentor and monitor on-board training using the ISF record book. These companies are free to apply their own selection tools to assess and choose candidates.

Upon joining the programme, cadets have completed all necessary academic studies up to Officer of the Watch level, along with all required STCW short courses.

Cadets are expected to complete a minimum of 12 months of sea time aboard trading vessels with a Gross Tonnage of 500 or more and propulsion power of at least 750KW. While post-graduation employment is not guaranteed, companies are encouraged to offer Junior Officer positions for six months prior to promoting cadets to senior ranks.
